About The Artwork

'I visited the marshes near my flat a lot more than normal during 2020. Without having a garden, any kind of green space became a place of escapism from lockdown, as I’m sure it did for many other people that year too. The start of the restrictions was a difficult time but it was also the beginning of spring and having more free time than I’ve ever had before - I began to really take notice of the abundance of shapes and colours that were in full bloom around me.

I started to take felt tips pens and card with me, so I could do lots of different drawing of the flowers and plants there. Then at home I arranged the drawings and copied them with paint on to a canvas to make this piece. I didn’t want to loose the playfulness of the felt tip drawings, so I kept the paint marks chunky with not much blending, using pure simple colours. I often paint about the relationship between plants and buildings. However, I kept this composition purely nature, because I wanted to remember how important this pocket of wildness was to me during that time.
