About The Artwork
Amrita Dhillon is an Indian artist living and working in Berlin. Working primarily as a painter, her work draws on a variety of sources, including personal and found imagery, in an effort to connect the present experience with a legacy in the past. Family photographs and childhood memories from her time in India, as well as references sourced from cinema, found photography, art history, and literature - all have an influence on her image-making.
'The painting presented here, titled 'Reflections on a Monster // The Old Dark House, 1932 ‘ is part of a series of paintings based on classic cinema: a series that explores painting as parallel to viewing, almost as a form of active viewing that translates the psychological experience of watching movies through color and form. It is also an image that very much reflects my own experience of loneliness and a certain form of existential dysmorphia during this global pandemic. This is a collective global experience that will change the way we see ourselves - both in the private sense of 'self reflected in the mirror' and in the the broader sense of our species' destiny going forward. I believe this image reflects an experience we have all had during this time: alone, anxious, and faced with long hours to reflect upon ourselves.'
